Allergan CoolSculpting Legacy — The Original Fat Freezer
The CoolSculpting Legacy (often just referred to as the CoolSculpting System) is the original FDA-cleared cryolipolysis device that launched the non-invasive body contouring industry. While it has been entirely replaced by the dual-applicator CoolSculpting Elite (and outclassed by newer technologies like EMSCULPT NEO), it still exists heavily on the secondary market. However, due to its older U-shaped applicators, longer treatment times, and Allergan's stringent consumable policies, used pricing has collapsed to $15,000-$25,000.

The Allergan Consumable Block
If you buy a used CoolSculpting Legacy, you cannot simply call Allergan and order treatment cards. Allergan enforces a "recertification fee" on secondary market buyers (often quoted between $20,000 and $40,000). Until this fee is paid, they will not sell you the consumable cards required to run the machine. Do not buy a used CoolSculpting machine unless the seller is including hundreds of pre-loaded cycles, or you have already negotiated your recertification fee.
Legacy vs CoolSculpting Elite
| Feature | Legacy | Elite | |---|---|---| | Applicators | 1 (Single treatment) | 2 (Dual Sculpting) | | Cup Shape | U-Shape (classic) | C-Shape (better tissue contact) | | Chiller Capacity | Standard | Upgraded | | Used Price | $15K-$25K | $35K-$90K |
Market Reality: The body contouring market is moving away from cryolipolysis toward RF and muscle-building technologies (EMSCULPT NEO, truSculpt, Evolve). The risk of PAH (Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia) combined with high consumable costs makes the Legacy system a risky investment for a new clinic in 2026.
